Erin came to her first session and she was just furious! The way her boss, Bob, was talking to her was unacceptable. It was always the same story: Bob was asking more and more every day, without giving any explanation or reason. "I'm just a robot!", Erin complained. I let her unwind for a moment, then I asked her a simple question: "What can you tell me about your boss ?". Erin was surprised : "What do you mean ?". "A character trait, a hobby, something personal?". Erin realized that she knew Bob as her boss. But she knew nothing about the person behind. In one year working together, they had never created a personal conversation, they always exclusively talked about work, even during coffee breaks or lunch time. We decided to focus our coaching work on creating a more personal relationship. Erin agreed to create each day an opportunity to connect differently, in order to open the door to a new dialogue, where she was able to express her expectations. Six sessions later, Erin entered my office with a smile on her face:"listen to this funny story Bob just told me!". This was the end of our coaching sessions... but the beginning of a real relationship based on trust and mutual respect.
